Recognized as “the heart of the St. George arts community” by Art Around the Corner Foundation spokesperson Kristy Pike, nationally renowned sculptor and painter L’Deane Trueblood was honored with Art Around the Corner’s annual Partner in the Arts Award at an April 11 gala opening the 2008 Art Around the Corner exhibit.
Trueblood’s many sculptures grace the community, and her piece “Celebration” is featured in the 2008 Art Around the Corner outdoor sculpture exhibit. Two of Trueblood’s sculptures are currently part of the city of St. George’s permanent art collection, including “Millennial Dawn” and “Hitchin’ a Ride.”
The annual Partner in the Arts Award honors an individual (or couple) who has supported the arts and enriched the St. George artistic community. Previous recipients include Doug and Elaine Alder and Sue and the late Merv Cox.
Joining Trueblood, guests and local dignitaries at the gala were well-known artists Grant Speed, James Christensen, and Susan Geissler as well as area artists Ed Hlavka, Annette Everett, Matt Clark and others.
Sara Urquhart, chair of the Dixie Arts Foundation, said of Trueblood’s work on behalf of art and artists: “St. George is a richer place because of the efforts of this amazing woman and artist.”
Urquhart also announced St. George city’s purchase of Matt Clark’s sculpture “St. George’s Dragon” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the arts organization, originally known as the Pioneer Center for the Arts. Clark’s sculpture was part of the 2007 Art Around the Corner Exhibit. This year’s exhibit features another of Clark’s sculptures, “Portal.”
Trueblood thanked the Dixie Arts Foundation and the city of St. George for their support of Art Around the Corner, a program in which the sculptures of prominent artists from throughout the nation are brought to St. George on loan and placed outdoors for residents and visitors to enjoy through the year. The sculptures are available for purchase by individuals or organizations. This year, 25 sculptures are part of the open-air exhibit in the heart of the city’s historic district.
