Two screenings – one in Spanish and one in English – will show in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theater at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
“Now that it's finished, I'm really excited to show the film for the first time in the United States and to hold the premiere here at Dixie State College,” Tuckett stated in a press release.
A documentary, the film's premise is “Where South American futbol meets USA soccer.” It details the goings-on of the Golden Age League, a competitive soccer league for middle-aged players in Queens, N.Y. The Golden Age League is composed of former world champions, most of them from South and Central America, who have returned to the game of soccer. Though older and less brawny than in their glory days, the players are nonetheless incredibly skilled, according to information from DSC.
The Golden Age League players labor in a variety of professions during their work week, and team members range in occupation from dishwashers to electricians. On the weekends, however, these champions don jerseys and return to the competitive soccer field.
The film documents the various Golden Age League players and teams as they compete throughout the season and endure such professional sports-related controversies as payoffs, betting rings, expulsion and boycotts. The documentary additionally takes viewers on a journey through South America to the places where many Golden Age League players, and some current professional players, got their starts in soccer.
The film is narrated by actor Edward James Olmos, who may attend the St. George premiere if his schedule allows it, according to information from DSC.
“The Golden Age – A Passion to Last a Lifetime” has been a collaboration between Emmy Award-winner Tuckett – who served as co-producer, director, editor, writer and photographer for the film – and six-time Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Scott Duncan. The film debuted internationally at the Guadalajara Film Festival in 2007, and Tuckett said he is honored to have the film's U.S. debut happen at Dixie State, where he was once a student athlete more than 40 years ago.
Ticket sales from the premiere will help two current Dixie State students, Bobby Bowden and Ben Braten, travel to the French Riviera to attend the famed Cannes Film Festival in May. The students' short film “Through the Lens” was selected for the Cannes Film Festival, and they will be the first Utah college film students to ever be selected for Cannes, according to information from DSC.
“It's exciting to be able to help these two talented Dixie State College film students travel to Cannes for the festival,” Tuckett said. “These students are getting an opportunity that never comes to most filmmakers. We're hoping the money raised at the premier will help Bobby and Ben make the most of their opportunity to go and experience an event at the pinnacle of filmmaking.”
Tickets for the premiere of “The Golden Age – A Passion to Last a Lifetime” will be $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Tickets will be available at the door or through the DSC Box Office, 652-7800. For more information about the documentary, visit www.thegoldenageofsoccer.com.
