First-ever Girls’ Golf Season Opens

Girls at local high schools are preparing to tee off for the first-ever girls’ golf season. The girls’ golf program is new to Utah High Schools. In the past, if a girl wanted to compete in golf, she had to join the boys’ team.
“A lot of our girls have never played golf except maybe once or twice with their parents,” Snow Canyon’s head coach, Carl Franke said.
This will be more of an instructional league for many of the girls. Snow Canyon’s girls’ golf team consists of seven players: one sophomore, one senior, and five juniors.
“Aubry Coup is really the only one that has played in tournaments before. So this is going to be a different experience. It’s going to be fun, but it will be a different experience for a lot of these girls,” Franke said.
Because this program is new to the state, there are a lot of unanswered questions. Each school will host a tournament that all of the local high schools will attend. The girls will only be playing nine holes this year. How to score the tournaments is still a subject of discussion. They may implement a “double par” limit or give a max score of ten strokes per hole as is done for the boys’ teams. A “double par” limit means that each player is allotted twice the number as the par on the hole. If they do not complete the hole in the allotted number of strokes, they will pick up their ball and move to the next hole. The scores will be tabulated for 3A and 4A separately but may be combined in the event of a tie.  Because of the limited number of girls playing, the girls may compete against girls outside of the region.
The region tournament will be held at Sun Brook Golf Course on May 6.
