The baseball season was kicked off with three tournaments, held at each of the St. George area high schools. The tournaments brought in approximately 20 teams from Utah and Nevada.
Dixie High placed third in the Donnie Pymm Pizza Hut Classic. After winning the 2007 3A State Championship, the Dixie Flyers lost many of their starting players.
“We were pleased. I thought we played pretty well for being a young team. We’ve got to look at a lot of things,” head coach Jeff Messerly said. “Region play is always tough with the new 4A format that we’re in. It’s really going to battle. I think all three teams are very competitive. I’d have to give the nod to Pine View as far as being the most experienced. Hopefully we’ll be up for the challenge when we get to play them.”
In five games, Pine View has scored an average of 6.4 more runs than their competitors. They are currently ranked third in the state behind Cyprus and Cottonwood.
“The 4A classification is very tough. There are some great teams. We definitely have increased expectations of our players and coaches to meet the level of play from some of the other teams, but we look forward to trying to meet those expectations and play at a higher level,” Pine View’s head coach Jonathon Howell said. “We need to continue to move forward. If we become satisfied with where we are right now and don’t work to become better each day and each week, pretty soon we’ll find ourselves in trouble. As long as we continue to move forward, we can have a successful year.”
