Region 9 Girls’ Softball Looking Strong for State
By Nissa Lamb
The softball season swung into action with the 18th Annual March Warm-Up at Snow Canyon The tournament was for both 4A and 5A schools. Forty-eight teams from Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Nevada competed for the number-one spot. The Dixie girls warmed up for their game in four stations: hitting soft toss, bunt, wiffle balls, and hitting sticks.
“We got three or four girls back from last year that played a lot and are very good players,” Lady Flyers coach Randy Simkins said. “There are a couple kids that will play in college somewhere. We’ve got some kids that are very talented.
“Snow Canyon and Pine View both got most of their players back, so it’s going to be a dogfight,” Simkins said.
In current region standings, Snow Canyon leads the region over Pine View and Dixie. Despite being new to the 4A ranking, Region 9 appears to have some strong teams and may have what it takes to make a strong showing on the state level. Snow Canyon is ranked third in the state, with Dixie ranked fifth. Pine View may also prove to be a tough team to beat, as they lead the state in averaging 9.8 runs per game after five games.
