A host of familiar, haunting melodies will sweep into the Cox Auditorium on March 28, brought to life by a trio of powerful voices in St. George Musical Theater's “Music of the Night.”
“It will be a beautiful collection of music from shows that people really love, like 'Phantom of the Opera,' and 'Les Misérables,'” producer Jan Broberg said.
Performers George Dyer, Catherine Hyde Stambaugh and Brodie Perry will be the featured talent in “Music of the Night.”
An operatic tenor, Dyer has had a strong presence in the music world for many years. Professional vocalist Stambaugh played the role of Christine opposite legendary “Phantom” Michael Crawford in the Broadway touring production of “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.” Both will perform numbers from “Phantom of the Opera” and other favorite Broadway musicals as they fill the night with song.
“George Dyer and Catherine Stambaugh are better than anyone I have seen on Broadway. They are just phenomenal. These are world-class singers,” Broberg said. “They're just phenomenal voices, and they're powerful entertainers on stage. It will be a thrilling evening, featuring some of the music that everybody just loves to hear.”
Perry, a local talent, has been seen before on the SGMT stage in such productions as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” He will also lend his voice to “Music of the Night” to stir the audience with his renditions of favorite songs. Perry will additionally perform as one of the “Three Tenors,” a favorite attraction from SGMT shows of the past, Broberg said.
The “Music of the Night” musicians will be accompanied by a live jazz combo, headed up by St. George performer Jeff Tuscano. It will be “a concert not to miss,” Broberg said.
“A whole lineup of probably some of the most beloved, exciting music that's ever hit a Broadway stage will be on our stage, with probably three of the most incredible singers that St. George audiences have ever heard,” Broberg said. “All the proceeds will go to our 'Raise the Roof in 80 Days' campaign.”
As SGMT continues to move toward completion of its new theater on 1000 East in St. George, the contributions of local theatergoers are paving the way. All ticket sales from “Music of the Night” will benefit the theater construction efforts.
Tickets for “Music of the Night” will begin at $15. Premium seating, which will include hors d'oeuvres, mingling with the stars and private, encore performances after the show, will be $50.
Those interested in donating to SGMT beyond the price of a ticket can become members of “The Grand Circle,” a sponsorship title reserved for contributors of $1,000 or more to SGMT's building efforts. In return for their donations, Grand Circle members will receive two premium tickets to “Music of the Night,” two tickets to the upcoming SGMT “Georgie Awards” on April 19, two tickets to any SGMT musical theater production (“The Fantasticks,” “High School Musical,” “Honk!” and “The Secret Garden” are upcoming) and two 30-minute massages donated by a local merchant.
The outlook is good for the theater's progress, Broberg said, and each contribution puts SGMT a little nearer to its goal.
“We're getting closer. Some really, really good things are happening,” Broberg said. “The community is responding so positively. We have people joining the Grand Circle daily, and we just are excited that the funds are flowing in. Keep it up! We are getting closer.”
Broberg encourages community members to get involved with St. George Musical Theater, if they haven't already done so.
“It's a great thing to be a part of, and now is the time to make that commitment and to be a part of leaving a legacy for our future children and grandchildren,” she said. “This is where they develop their talents. This is where they have an opportunity to share those talents and those dreams. A community theater serves an important need, where you don't have to be a professional. You can come out, and everybody's welcome.”
“Music of the Night” will take place one night only, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium at Dixie State College, 225 S. 700 East in St. George. For ticket information, call the SGMT box office at 628-8755.
