The 11th annual Redrock Writers Creative Writing Seminar will take place March 14 and 15 at the Pioneer Center for the Arts, 47 E. 200 North.
“We are pleased to announce the participation of four outstanding presenters for our 11th Annual Creative Writing Seminar,” said Gary Christian, president of Redrock Writers Guild.
Guy Lebeda, writer and poet, Salt Lake City, is Literature Programs Manager of the Utah Arts Council and will make his presentation on “Entering Writing Contests.” His work has been published in Salt Lake City Magazine and many other publications. He is the author of a comedy radio script performed on NPR by Garrison Keillor on Prairie Home Companion.
N. Colwell Snell, poet, Salt Lake City, is Utah’s Poet of the Year for 2008 for his Utah State Poetry Society book of the year, “Hand Me My Shadow.” He will discuss “What’s Wrong With Form.” He has been published in several magazines and anthologies including By-Line, Bay Area Poet’s Coalition, Encore, California Quarterly, Grandmother Earth, Poet’s Forum, Harp-Strings Poetry Journal, and Oasis Journal. He was the editor of Utah Sings Volume VIII and co-authored the book “By the Throat, Selected Poems.”
Mark Swan, artist and writer, of St. George, is the owner/operator of Swan Animation. He has worked in the animation industry for 27 years, specializing in story and visual development. His credits include “An American Tale,” “Land Before Time,” “Curious George,” “All Dogs Go To Heaven,” “Thumbelina,” and more. His presentation will discuss Visual Storytellling: “How To Communicate With Pictures.”
Sue Chambers, poet, Good Thunder, Minnesota, a lawyer by profession, is past president of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the League of Minnesota Poets. She has served as a poet in the schools in Minnesota, Texas, Utah and Iowa. Her work has been published in Encore, the Moccasin Literary Magazine, Hairsprings Literary Magazine, The Midwest Review, and Minnesota Law and Politics Magazine. Her presentation will be on “Breaking a Poem.”
Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the Pioneer Opera House, the seminar presenters will give an overview of their seminar presentations. This will include readings from their works. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
Redrock Seminar classes on Saturday, March 15, are for paid participants as well as two student scholarships from each Washington County high school.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday evening, the winning entries in the Chaparral Poetry Forum, Redrock Writers national poetry competition will be announced and read. This event is open to the public at no charge. More than $700 in prizes will be awarded to the winning poets, including winning student poets from Washington County School District.
Following presentation of the prizes and reading of the winning poems, an open microphone will be available for anyone attending to read from their own works or the works of others.
Cost of the seminar is $50 until March 10, and $60 thereafter.
