Nina Vilate Warner Black
Nina Vilate Warner Black was born Oct. 20, 1911, in Holden, Utah to Russell and Bertha Johnson Warner. She passed away in Fillmore, Utah, Feb. 14, 2008.
Her father was accidentally drowned when she was only three years old and her sister Maline was only one. Their mother raised her girls in Fillmore, Utah.
There Nina attended public schools, graduating from Millard High School in 1930. She then attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City in the fall of 1930.
On Dec. 24, 1930 she married Mark Chase Black in the Manti LDS Temple. They made their home in Kanosh, Utah, where they raised their five children.
Nina was active in the LDS church, serving in many organizations in teaching and leadership positions. She supported her husband when he served as bishop of the Kanosh Ward. She was also involved in community activities, such as the 4-H program where she taught her daughters and their friends to cook and sew.
After her husband’s death in 1965, she went to work at the Steven's Department Store in Fillmore, Utah. Throughout her life she enjoyed working in her yard, only hiring someone to mow the lawn after her 90th birthday.
She continued to do all kinds of needlework. She is known for her beautiful quilts. Reading was also a passion. These things were curtailed when she was diagnosed with macular degeneration. Her family continued to be her pride and joy.
