Dixie High School and Pine View High School squared off to see which group could donate more blood during the ARUP Laboratories blood drive.
Dixie High's campus was ready for action on Jan. 30, encouraging students age 17 and 18 to donate, with their parent's permission. The faculty, too, was given an opportunity to roll up their sleeves for the event.
Pine View had their battlefield ready for operation on Jan. 31, also encouraging students age 17 and 18 to step up and donate, given parental consent. Teachers and administrators who showed no fear queued up to do a little donating of their own.
ARUP Blood Services, a national clinical and pathology laboratory associated with the University of Utah, were on site both days to collect blood donations from each school.
According to Lance Bandley, ARUP Blood Services spokesperson, "ARUP Blood Services is the sole blood provider for the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, and Shriners Hospital for Children."
There are 43 hospitals in Utah, but just these four alone use 25 percent of the blood in the state.
In a great show of support, Pine View came in first with 59 units of blood. Dixie High pulled a close second with 54 units.
Even with some students turned away due to the effects of the cold and flu season, both schools were very appreciative of the numbers who came out in support of the blood drive.
