During the 3A state wrestling tournament, Feb. 8-10 at Utah Valley State College, there was more than enough excitement, drama and emotion to go around.
The Dixie Flyers were represented by Deric Clawson as well as the 2006 state runner-up, Nate Carter, giving the Flyers hope of bringing home a state title.
Snow Canyon's Marty Rubalcaba, also a 2006 state runner-up, would square off against Dixie’s Clawson as the two vied for state champion honors in the 119-pound weight class.
Rubalcaba, a state runner-up from a year ago, made history by defeating his opponent 5-0 in the Class 3A title match. He is the first wrestler in Warrior history to have achieved such honors.
Another Region 9 wrestler to grab a state title was Dixie’s Nate Carter. Carter defeated North Sanpete's Danny Hansen 2-1 in the lowest scoring finals match.
In team standings, it was the Dixie High School wrestlers, led by Class 3A coach of the year Brian Pace, who came out ahead of their fellow Region 9 competitors. The Flyers finished fifth overall with 129 points, behind Wasatch at 238, North Sanpete at 171.5, Uintah at 171 and Delta at 133.5.
