By the Dixie Weekly
Welcome to our newspaper. As "the new voice of Southern Utah," we hope to be a positive voice telling you about the people, places, and events in Dixie.
Published by Xclusive Marketing and owner Derral Eves, Dixie Weekly's sister newspapers are the Dixie Weekly News, beginning its 10th year, and the Cedar City Review, turning two.
“We’re so excited to be part of St. George now,” said Eves. “So much is happening in Dixie, and we’re looking forward to being here and serving the community. We hope you enjoy our newspaper.”
As with its sister newspapers, we have a different mission here at Dixie Weekly News. We believe you can get enough negative news elsewhere. And world and national news sources abound. But this newspaper will focus on our corner of Southern Utah. We'll tell you what there is to do here, what new businesses are opening their doors, what interesting things your neighbors are doing, what your kids are achieving in school and on the playing fields, and what's going on around town and how you can be a part of it. Stories about maintaining good physical health and financial health, arts and entertainment, where to take a pleasant Saturday hike, and other information you can use will round out our pages – along with a weekly spot of humor.
We'll listen to you, too. In our Community Voice section, we'll report your responses to our question of the week and share what you think with your neighbors. Send us your announcements of births, marriages, anniversaries, 1-year-old birthdays, missionary news, obituaries, and other personal milestones for People in Dixie. Submit an event or public opportunity for our Announcements section, or place a timely event in our This Week in Dixie calendar section. E-mail us an interesting photo from around town for our City Snaps. Post your ad in our Classifieds section. Advertise your business in our pages. (See these sections in this issue for submission information.) Help us make this newspaper your source of local information.
But before you do, we want you to understand our mission at Dixie Weekly. We will follow three guidelines when writing stories and putting the newspaper together each week: "Is it about the community? Is it newsworthy? Is it positive?"
This is our mission statement. It means we'll publish nothing even remotely libelous or having the effect of pointing fingers or destroying reputations. We're going in a different direction. Our Letters to the Editor section will follow our mission statement as well. We'll print opinions about ISSUES, not people. We will not engage in name-calling or exchanges of vitriol. We'll focus instead on building our community and, yes, improving things that need improving. But more importantly, we'll focus on what's good about living in Dixie.
That said, this is your community newspaper. Send us your story ideas, call us when there's an event to cover, tell us your exciting news. And if you have a degree or experience in journalism, talk to us about writing for the paper. We can be reached at 656-1222, or by e-mail at editor@dixieweekly.com. Our new office is located at 376 E. Sunland Dr., Unit 6, in St. George.
All of us at Xclusive Marketing and Dixie Weekly News look forward to serving and growing with this community. We hope you enjoy this issue and keep reading us in the future. Look for our next issue to be in your mailbox on Sept. 28.
