Frank Merrill Harrison
Frank Merrill Harrison, 67, of Cedar City, Utah returned to our Heavenly Father, on July 30, 2007. He passed away peacefully at Dixie Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family, after a courageous, but short battle with Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis.
Merrill was born in Cedar City, Utah on June 1, 1940 to Georgia Knell and Murray Harrison. He was a loving father, devoted grandfather, caring husband, and a dependable friend. He was adored by his children and grandchildren.
He loved to make others laugh, always ready with an intriguing story, a funny tale, or quick to brag about his family. His sense of humor will be dearly missed. Under Merrill's tough exterior was a heart of gold.
As a child, Merrill grew up in Newcastle, Utah. He graduated from Cedar City High School where he excelled in football and was an excellent sprinter.
Early in life, his desire was to pursue a career in forestry, but these plans changed when he took a job with Utah International as a heavy equipment operator, later working his way up to a shovel operator. He was a hard worker and always made sacrifices to provide for his family after the closing of the mine.
Merrill loved to hunt fish and spend time with his family. He was an avid gun collector and loved the thrill of horsepower. He was a member of the Cedar City Elks Lodge for 43 years. He served on the Utah National Guard 222 Field Artillery for six years.
He was truly an inspiration to his family and all who knew him. Merrill will be greatly missed.
Merrill is survived by his wife of nine months (Sandra Anderson Harrison) of Cedar City, Utah; his children Dr. Lyle Murray (Connie) of Williston, N.D.; Ember Beth (Blaine) Harrison of St. George, Utah; and Merrill Barton "Crusher" of Logan, Utah; and his ex-wife, Sherry Barton Thompson, of Cedar City, Utah. Merrill also leaves behind five grandchildren, Chanc Sterling (Kayleigh) Jensen of Cedar City, Utah; Reed Merrill Harrison of Cedar City, Utah; and Bryce Lyle, Whitney Lynn, and Kyle Levi Harrison, all of Williston, N.D.
Also surviving are two brothers, Elwood Murray (Sally) of St. George, Utah; and Heber Lamond (Eva) of Henderson, Nev. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Cindy Mayne of Vacaville, Calif.; and Tami Pickett (Calvin) of Brian Head, Utah and nine step-grandchildren.
Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Murray and Georgia (Knell) Harrison; brother, Reed Knell Harrison, and stepson Scott Anderson.
Services were Monday, Aug. 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Rock Church, 75 E. Center in Cedar City. Viewings were Sunday, Aug. 5 and Monday, Aug. 6. Interment was in the New Castle Cemetery immediately following the service. A light meal was served at the New Castle LDS church immediately following the interment.
