Alta Cottrell
Williams Hyer
Alta Cottrell Williams Hyer, 83, left this world to be reunited with her many loved ones on July 17, 2007, in St. George, Utah. She was born July 18, 1923, in Kaysville, Utah, a daughter of Henry James and Myrtle Colemere Blood Cottrell. Her youth was spent in Kaysville, Wanship, Morgan and Roy, Utah.
She attended school in all four towns, graduated from Weber High School in Ogden, Utah, and then studied at Weber College. During World War II, she was employed at Hill Air Force Base and later worked as a receptionist for Dr. Harold Wheeler in Ogden.
Alta married Ernest Parry Williams May 11, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. During their marriage, they enjoyed living in Utah, Arizona and California, finally settling in St. George.
Ernest passed away in February 1984. She then married Dorris (Dodd) Hyer in St. George, in March1986. They enjoyed their time together, traveling, visiting with their families and working in the St. George Temple, where Alta served as a receptionist for five years. Dodd passed away Nov. 17, 1997.
Alta was a devoted member of the LDS Church, serving for many years as ward organist. She also enjoyed serving in the MIA presidency, singing in the Ogden Tabernacle Choir, and working as a stake missionary with her husband, Dodd.
Alta is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Elmer B. Cottrell and his wife, Bertha, Binden and Howard; infant son, Robert Guy Williams; three stepsons, Donald Ray Williams, Frank E. Williams, and Dale C. Hyer, and one stepdaughter, Jean W. Still. She is survived by her brother, Lloyd B. Cottrell (Nadine) of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters-in-law, Ila T. Cottrell and Violet H. Cottrell; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; also, one Williams step-daughter, Ruth W. (Harry) Pledger, of North Ogden; and the Hyer family stepchildren: Karlene (Conrad) Facer, of St. George; Helen (Robert) Chambers, of Smithfield, Utah; Nancy (Jed) Allen, of St. George; Kenneth (Sandia) Hyer, of St. George; and daughter-in-law, Mollie C. Hyer, of Las Vegas; and their respective children and grandchildren, all of whom honor Alta and will miss her.
Services were Saturday, July 21, at the St. George 5th Ward Chapel, with Bishop Steve Quinn conducting. Interment was in the Ogden City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary (435) 673-4221. Condolences may be sent to the family through the Metcalf Web site at www.metcalfmortuary.com.
