In first round girl’s soccer action last week, both Dixie and Snow Canyon were able to advance, while Pine View and Hurricane were eliminated.
Dixie easily advanced by knocking out Tooele 5 - 0. Jordyn Hutchinson got the Flyers off to a quick start by scoring in the 10th minute. Goals by Mykell Griffin and McCall Rynearson made it 3-0 at the half. Kalehua Harward scored first in the second half, while Rynearson finished off the scoring attack with her second goal of the game a few minutes later.
Snow Canyon was able to shut down Judge’s high-powered offense and forced the game into overtime. Ami Parry’s goal just a couple of minutes into the extra period gave the Warriors the 1-0 win.
Hurricane was ousted from the tournament by losing to Wasatch 1–0. The Tigers finished the season 6–8–2.
Pine View was also victim to a first round loss. Park City was able to put two scores on the board and defeated the Panthers 2 – 0. The Panthers finished the year with a record of 6-10.
In second round action, Dixie was able to push itself into the semifinals, while Snow Canyon gave up a 1–0 halftime lead and was beaten 3–1 by Juan Diego.
Jordyn Hutchinson propelled the Flyers to a 4–0 victory with a hat trick, scoring one goal in the first half and blasting two more in the second. Cherie Lyle led the team with three assists.
Mikkel Griffin got Dixie off on the right foot by scoring in the 9th minute, while Hutchinson scored her first goal with 9:30 remaining in the first half. The Flyers took the 2–0 lead into the locker room at the break and never let up.
“Our girls are very unique,” said Dixie coach Burt Myers after the game. “They don’t need reminders to stay motivated or to keep focus; they seem to motivate themselves from within. It is a contagious feeling and it keeps the team going.”
Myers w
as all business during the game, but afterwards was all smiles as his team moved one step closer to the state title.
“We could have passed to the feet a little better,” Myers said of improvements the team can make. “However, we did a great job winning the ball and didn’t make too many mistakes. Our skills and ability are coming to a peak at this point and we are excited it is happening now, so deep in the tournament.”
Hutchinson provided the only goals of the second half, scoring first on a floater from the right side that just got over the hands of the goalie. Her second goal was from virtually the same spot and she was able to squeeze it through just inside the outside post.
“Today was fun,” Hutchinson said of the victory. “We are excited to move on and look forward to Friday’s game.”
Dixie will take on Park City -- which defeated Ogden in the second round -- in a semi-final match-up at Dixie State on Friday.
