Daniel Boyd Crawford
Daniel Boyd Crawford died at his home in St. George on Friday, March 23, 2007. He was born in Oak Creek, Utah (now Zion National Park) on Dec. 10, 1914 to Daniel and Sarah Sabrina Curtis Crawford.
He and his wife, Helen Hyatt, were married on Nov. 1, 1939 in the St. George Temple and are the parents of six children. He attended schools in Springdale, Hurricane and Cedar City and graduated from Parowan High School. Furthermore, he received an associate degree from BAC, now Southern Utah University.
Dan’s life was filled with service to the church and his community. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand and served on multiple stake missions in Cedar City. He was bishop of the Cedar City Third Ward and stake president of the Cedar City, Utah Stake.
He and his wife were called to serve as mission president in the Hawaii Mission from 1978-1981 and then were called as Idaho Temple Visitor Center Director from 1983-1985.
His knowledge and lectures on the Book of Mormon were legendary as were his strict adherence and devotion to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Without doubt his faith and testimony of Jesus Christ and his love for his wife and family were most important in his life.
He was a car dealer by profession and was part owner of Jones-Crawford Motor Company with the Desoto-Plymouth dealership and Crawford Motor Sales — used cars.
He traveled extensively with his business and was always on the lookout for stranded motorists and those requiring assistance. Stories abound of him spending hours and money in helping those in need.
He was a member of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce in Cedar City and Hey Cedars Square Dance club and was good at calling as well as dancing. He is well-known for his spirituality, integrity, leadership and humor. He was a great practical joker and avid story teller and regaled guests with well-told jokes and songs. Moreover, he was an ardent student of Indian lore and history.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of St. George, four sons, B. Glen (Paula), Alan H. (Gail), Kerry D. and Curtis H. (Anna) of Cedar City and two daughters Renee (Mike) Stucki and Gail (Lynn) Bunker of St. George; 39 grandchildren, 111 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings; Carl Crawford, Merle Crawford, Leta Olsen, Junius Ruesch and Vilate Joseph, and one great-granddaughter Emma Wellborn.
