The Utah Boy Scouts will be canvassing local neighborhoods, collecting bags filled with food for Southern Utah Care and Shares on Saturday, March 24. Donated food items should be ready for pickup on doorsteps by 8 a.m.
“Scouts will be delivering bags door-to-door during the week prior to the drive,” Ken Marshall, coordinator of the Southern Utah Scouting for Food Drive said. “However, if for some reason you don’t receive a bag, please drop your donation off at the nearest Care and Share.”
The Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America puts this drive together every year in conjunction with the nationwide Good Turn for America Day.
“We’ve also incorporated a little bit of a rivalry with the postal workers, who do a (food) drive in May,” Marshall said. “Please make a generous donation and have your filled bags on your doorstep by 8 a.m. on the 24th.”
Shelters cannot accept home-canned foods, glass containers, or perishables. The bags the Scouts distribute list acceptable and unacceptable items, Marshall said
“We are grateful for each and every donation,” Kara Coop, executive director of the shelter, said. “There is always a need for food.”
The board of trustees for Dixie Care and Share is currently organizing fundraising and other committees, Coop said. If you are interested in volunteering on a committee or at the shelter, please call 628-3661.
