“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was a song that made the top of the charts by the a capella group The Nylons in the 1970's. This world renowned quartet will be in concert at the Cox Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Pop groups come and go. They are as impermanent as the weather, unless, like The Nylons, they know how to make old music sound fresh.
The Nylons are one of the world's best known and most honored a capella vocal quartets. They are the originators of a classic version of “Wimoweh/The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
"(The song) refers to an old legend down there, [about] their last king, who was known as Chaka The Lion. Legend says, Chaka The Lion didn't die when Europeans took over their country; he simply went to sleep, and he'll wake up some day,” Pete Seeger said about the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
With seven gold & platinum recordings, this four member vocal group is a true international success story. Known for their great a cappella sound, dazzling harmonies and smooth arrangements, The Nylons immense appeal has taken them across North America, Europe, Australia, China and Japan. The group is celebrating their 25th Anniversary in the recording industry with the release of their fourteenth CD, “Sterling.” The Nylons continue to perform worldwide to passionate audiences and critical acclaim. “A Million Ways,” “Rock & Roll Lullaby,” “Somethin' 'Bout 'Cha,” and many more.
The Nylons will be joined in concert with the nationally-acclaimed and regional award-winning a cappella group, T Minus 5.
